작품 상세

Multicolored floral decoration with a central motif of entwined carnations among serrated saz leaves—typical of this period—whose tips join to form a heart shape. Painted on a bright white ground with cobalt blue, green, raised red, and black outlines. Around the rim, alternating “breaking wave” patterns. The reverse features polychrome vegetal motifs. One area of the rim has been restored—without affecting the central motif—while another has a small hole for a cord, an old method of hanging used in Greek wall-plate arrangements. A characteristic example of the most brilliant period of Iznik ceramics, where technical mastery and refined aesthetics approached perfection. The impeccable painted decoration, the pure whiteness, and the intense blood-red hue indicate that the dish belongs to the polychrome phase of Iznik ceramics from the early 1570s. A rare decorative composition inspired by the saz style of painting developed by designers at the imperial court in the mid-16th century. A dish of comparable aesthetic and quality from the Stefanos Lagonikos collection was auctioned by Sotheby’s in September 1991.
