작품 상세

Under Seow Keng's vision, the village landscape is reimagined through a cubist lens, where thatched roofs, coconut palms, and organic forms are deconstructed and reassembled together into dimensional planes. This intricate batik composition offers multiple perspectives at once, transforming a traditional subject into a fresh and captivating interpretation of village life. Influenced by his rigorous German training, marked by method and complexity akin to the Germanic "Protestant / Puritan Work Ethic," Seow Keng mastered intricate explorations of geometry and mathematical permutations. While his father was renowned for batik, Seow Keng pursued studies in plastic technology, focusing on fiberglass sculpture, under a scholarship at the Süddeutsches Kunststoff-Zentrum in Würzburg, northern Bavaria, in 1968. He held his first solo batik exhibitions in Japan in 1973, followed by shows in Tokyo, Osaka and Okinawa in 1975. His works have since received international acclaim, including a Certificate of Excellence at the Artitudes 7th International Art Competition in New York (1989). Several of his paintings, such as Fish (1981), Rural Life (1986), and Sunrise (1992), were selected by UNICEF for their greeting cards. Alongside painting, he has also completed several fiberglass sculpture commissions.
