ATTRIBUTED TO PABLO PICASSO (1881-1973): ELS QUÁTRE GATS Pen, ink and watercolor on MBM laid paper, signed in ink lower left, inscribed 'Pere Romeau' and 'Miguel Utrillo Barcelona' and with a pencil study of a man's head in purple on the reverse. 20 x 19 in. (sheet), 36 x 34 1/2 in. (frame). Note: Els Quátre Gats was a bar in Barcelona that became the center of the emerging Modernism art movement in Spain at the beginning of the 20th Century. The owners were Pere Romeau, Santiago Rusiñol and Miguel Utrillo (Romeau's and Utrillo's names are written on the reverse of this work). Popular with artists and writers, El Quatre Gats hosted one of the first one-man shows of Pablo Picasso. Despite its notoriety, the bar was forced to close in 1903 due to outstanding debt. Fortunately, a group of restaurant investors took steps to revive the historic business, and in 1989 Els Quátre Gats reopened as a fine dining restaurant. This image is used at the cover of their menu.
