NATALIA GONTCHAROVA (1881-1962): DANCER Pencil on paper, with an ink stamp lower right. With label from Mercury Gallery, London. 15 x 9 in. (sheet), 21 x 14 1/2 in. (frame). Note: Gontcharova was a Russian avant-garde artist and a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter group. In 1915, she began to design ballet costumes for Sergei Diaghilev. She was trained as a painter at the Moscow School of Painting and exhibited regularly at the Salon des Tuilleries and the Salle des Independants in Paris.
