After graduating from Polytechnic University of Milan with a degree in architecture, he began submitting cartoons to the humor newspaper Bertoldo, later contributing to The New Yorker, Fortune, Vogue, Mademoiselle, and Harper's Bazaar after immigrating to the United States in order to escape from anti-Semitic laws emerging under Fascist rule. Steinberg's work is known for pioneering boundaries apart from low and high art, with experience in advertising, photography, textiles, stage sets, and murals.
