A WHITE JADE ‘TWIN DRAGON’ PRINCIPAL PENDANT, HENG, EASTERN ZHOU PERIOD Published: Myrna Myers (ed.) & Filippo Salviati (auth.), Radiant Stones. Archaic Chinese Jades, Paris, 2000, no. 106. Expert’s note: The refinement of the carving and the elaborate decoration indicate that this pendant served as a heng, the principal component of a pectoral. China, 3rd century BC. The openwork pendant of very thin, flattened form, pierced and carved as two confronting dragon heads issuing from an arch-shaped body, their snouts curled, their bodies finely incised with raised scrolls, and flanked above and below by stylized birds. The top with an aperture for suspension. The stone is of a semi-translucent white color with icy-white inclusions, and veins of deep russet and brown. Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012. With two collection numbers ‘51’ and ‘4529’. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Ancient wear, signs of prolonged burial, traces of weathering, erosion, little nibbling, and few soil encrustations. The stone with natural inclusions and fissures, some of which have developed into small hairline cracks. Weight: 25.2 g Dimensions: Length 12.4 cm The ornament was crafted through a meticulous, multi-stage process. The design was first outlined on the stone, followed by the drilling of precisely placed holes that defined the motifs—visible in the curling elements, the dragons’ snouts, and the lower openwork. These holes were then expanded to create hollowed areas, the contours smoothed—likely with drills and bow-drawn wires—and the finest details incised with thin, nail-like rotary tools.
