Louis XVI Ormolu & ‘Sevres’ Porcelain 'Cercles Tournants' Urn & Serpent Table Clock Late 18th Century, in the manner of Antoine Crosnier, the movements back plate inscribed Rodel The neoclassical urn with mask handles, the hour and minute rings inset with enamel numerals, the time indicated by a serpent, on a square plinth, set with two doors, inset with ‘Sevres’ floral sprig plaques, the reverse with indistinct underglaze blue markings, the whole case finely cast and chased. Height 15.75 in., Width at base, square 6.75 in. Cf. Very rarely found in earlier clocks, the rotating horizontal dials of these cercles tournants clock come into their own in the Louis XVI period. They particularly lend themselves to neo-classical urns with an associated pedestal base to contain the clock movement. In the present example this theme is taken one step further in incorporating Sèvres porcelain plaques to three sides of the base.
