Important Ormolu-Mounted Lapis Lazuli Mantel Clock with Companion Candelabra An important ormolu-mounted lapis lazuli mantel clock, centered by a circular dial with Arabic chapters set within a rectangular case flanked by bowed spears, above a military trophy beneath a ribbon-tied lion’s mask. The superstructure is surmounted by a bust of Napoleon, framed by eagles suspending a laurel swag. The conforming base features cannon supports and rests on a rectangular plinth enriched with applied berried-laurel swags, raised on finely engine-turned globular feet. Accompanied by a matching pair of monumental obelisk-form four-light candelabra, each with scrolling trumpet-form branches surmounted by winged Victory holding aloft a laurel crown. Each raised on rectangular pedestals with cannon supports and conforming plinths decorated with berried-laurel swags and engine-turned globular feet. Height: 35 inches (clock and each candelabrum, Width of candelabra 13 in., Width of clock 16.5 in., Depth of candelabra 9.5 in., Depth of clock 13.5 in. specialist note: The richly colored lapis lazuli panels display deep cobalt tones with natural golden pyrite inclusions, providing striking contrast to the finely chased and gilded ormolu mounts throughout. Provenance Formerly from the estate of Mrs. Barbara Woodward Lips, wife of Charles Storch Lips, a San Antonio businessman with interests in gas, oil, and ranching. Mrs. Lips was a Mayo Clinic patient for more than forty years and a generous benefactor, making numerous significant lifetime gifts to the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research.
