A painted enamel "Canton Enamel" Ewer (Hanap) China, Qing Dynasty, Qianlong Period (1736–1795) Height: 32 cm (12.6 in) This exceptional and elaborately decorated ewer, often referred to as a hanap due to its tall, stemmed form, is an outstanding example of Canton Enamel (Guangcai). The form and decoration demonstrate the high degree of technical skill and the fusion of European and Chinese aesthetic preferences during the Qianlong era.The ewer is finely crafted from copper, entirely covered in brilliantly colored enamels applied over the metal body (often referred to as cloisonné or falangcai in imperial contexts, but specifically Guangcai when produced for export or in the Guangzhou/Canton workshops). The complex design utilizes a wide palette, including vibrant pink (fencai or rose-pink) and deep blue. The vessel is distinguished by its unique, multi-part structure: a flared, quatrefoil rim and spout; a slender, S-shaped handle; a swelling, globular body; and a tall, multi-tiered stem supported by a splayed, circular foot. This highly elaborate and Western-inspired form is extremely rare in Chinese ceramics and metalwork, pointing to a specific commission, likely for export or for the imperial court's taste for exotic objects. The globular central section is predominantly decorated with a rich pink enamel ground, featuring stylized lotus petals or lappets (Ruyi lappets) filled with complex floral and foliate scrollwork. The Neck and Handle: The elongated neck and handle are adorned with fine, intricate European-style scrollwork, small flower vignettes, and decorative borders, including patterns resembling lacework or brocade. The foot and pedestal are richly decorated with layered bands of colorful. This piece represents the zenith of the Guangzhou workshops' ability to marry traditional Chinese motifs with European Rococo shapes and designs, catering to the sophisticated tastes of 18th-century European collectors and royalty. The sheer complexity of the shape and the dense, vibrant enameling make this ewer a masterpiece of Qing dynasty decorative arts.
