painted in vivid tones of underglaze-blue, within butterfly and greek-key and ruji head borders Length 36cm Davidson Collection no: 53 Provenance: Chiswick Auctions, 11th November 2019, lot 508 The Dutch folly fort was built on a sand bank in the Pearl River close to the foreign factories in Canton (Guangzhou) in a place said to be near a memorial temple to Li Maoying (1200-1257) of the Song dynasty. The Folly forts were a series of defensive structures set up by the Chinese in the Ming dynasty to protect Canton, (Guangzhou). By the beginning of the Qing dynasty the advances in naval weaponry made them redundant and had fallen into disrepair. Several Euro- pean countries, including the French and the Dutch, used them for storage and as bases for the staff.
