Zeng Guofan (1811–1872), courtesy name Bohan and art name Disheng, was a native of Xiangxiang, Hunan. A prominent official in the late Qing Dynasty, he founded the Xiang Army and was a pioneer in China's early modernization efforts. Although his artistic accomplishments are often overshadowed by his political and military achievements, Zeng was highly skilled in calligraphy and classical prose. He practiced calligraphy diligently from a young age, excelling in regular and running scripts. Drawing influence from Ouyang Xun, Yan Zhenqing, and Northern Stele traditions, his style is rigorous, forceful, and structurally robust—valuing moral vigor over superficial elegance, reflecting his own steadfast and uncompromising character. His theory of calligraphy emphasized “a stubborn, unyielding spirit in brushwriting,” evident in the vigorous and straightforward energy of his strokes. As a key later representative of the Tongcheng School of classical prose, his writings are profound, solemn, and blend reason with emotion. His family letters and diaries, in particular, have had enduring influence, revealing both his deep erudition and the moral worldview of a Confucian scholar-official. Although not primarily remembered as an artist, his calligraphy and literary style embody the cultural resilience and intellectual ideals of late Qing literati during a time of profound transformation.
