CHINA, 20th CENTURY Figure of Yama Dharmaraja in union with his consort Gilded bronze The god of death Yama is shown standing on a reclining buffalo and a human figure, in a dynamic posture within a mandorla of flames. He holds the scepter of death in his right hand, accompanied by his consort in a symbolic embrace. The powerfully modeled body is adorned with ornaments and a diadem of skulls. This figure is part of the protective iconography of the Tibetan-influenced Buddhist pantheon.
