CHINA, LATE 18TH – EARLY 19TH CENTURYPair of floral compositions in hard stones in carved cinnabar lacquer pots Each of the compositions features a flowering shrub, form of a network of tworned branches in metal or resin, dotted with finely pruned leaves and corollasIn hard stones, including jade, calcedon, quartzite or lapis lazuli. The foliage, of great variety, is attached with careful care on a structure fixed in a lead base hidden in a cinnabar lacquer pot.The pots, of contoured oval shape, have a sculpted decor in deep relief on a background of crosses. Each side is decorated with an animated scene featuring characters in a tree garden or a mountainous landscape, framed by side panels with floral motifs.The upper border, molded, is decorated with flowers and foliage in light relief running along a pearled frieze. These compositions, often executed for the imperial march or the great Chinese residences, combined the refinement of the arts decOratives of lacquer and lapidary sculpture. They embodied both a taste for stylized nature and an artisanal feat specific to the Qing era.
