Highly Attractive Antique Factory Panel Scene Engraved Special Order Marlin Deluxe Model 1893 Lever Action Takedown Rifle with Gold Washed Screws and Small Parts Manufactured in 1896, this is an exceptional example of a special ordered, factory panel scene engraved, Marlin deluxe Model 1893 takedown rifle with gold washed screw heads and small parts. In 1893, Marlin launched its first lever action design made to handle smokeless powder, and incorporated the L.L. Hepburn designed side ejection feature which would become a staple of the Marlin repeater lineup. The Model 1893 would go on to be one of Marlin's most successful models, even while going head to head against Winchester's prolific, John M. Browning designed, Model 1894. These rifles remain highly desirable on the collectors market, particularly factory deluxe embellished examples like this one. The receiver shows the standard Grade No. 1 engraving, a design which was created and almost certainly executed by Conrad F. Ulrich. Ulrich is noted by William Brophy on p. 533 of "Marlin Firearms" as having executed almost all of the engraving on Marlin firearms during the period of 1881 to 1910. The masterfully executed Grade No. 1 engraving seen on this piece features decorative borders, circular flourishes of floral scroll, and a buck standing in a forested scene on the left. The screws, magazine tube lug, and magazine tube cap all have a factory gold washed finish. The top of the barrel flat is marked with the two-line address and patent date, while the caliber marking is at the breech. The Marlin Safety marking is on top of the receiver, while the serial number is on the bottom. The upper tang has the model marking. The matching serial number is repeated on the left side of the upper tang and in the stock inlet. It is fitted with a Lyman beaded blade front sight, a period replacement Marble's folding notch rear sight, a combination peep sight mounted on the upper tang, and a special order half magazine. It is mounted with an attractive, factory "No. A" checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with a checkered hard rubber buttplate.
