‡ ˜A FINE SILESIAN COMBINED FLINTLOCK PISTOL AND AXE (FOKOS), LATE 17TH CENTURY with iron barrel retaining some early blued finish, chiselled and punched with scrolls over the breech, slender tang decorated en suite, engraved bevelled lock decorated with a characteristic flowerhead (rubbed), iron trigger and trigger-plate, iron axe-head fitted over the muzzle, formed with a rectangular pean engraved with an expanded flowerhead, slender blade formed with a forward-leaning edge and engraved with bird-of-prey on one face, with aperture for the ramrod at the top (ramrod replaced), fruitwood haft inlaid in staghorn and ivory in the Teschen manner with scrolls and ball flowers inhabited by hounds, hares, foxes, and mythical beasts enriched with large engraved ball flowers and fruit in mother-of-pearl (small losses and minor repairs), and engraved staghorn pommel 74.7 cm; 29 3/8 in overall Provenance The collection of a Maréchal de France, formed in the course of his service as Governor in Germany during the Napoleonic Wars.
