Italian Pair of Putti Figures 18th century Measurements: approximately 22 1/2 in. H x 13 in. W (each) Carved wood with remnants of polychrome and gesso Monumental pair of carved wooden putti figures depicted standing and facing one another, each modeled with expressive gestures and softly rounded anatomical forms. The figures feature deeply carved, curling hair, rounded cheeks, and stylized wings with layered feather detailing. Executed at an unusually large scale, the carvings display traditional joined construction, with visible seams and wood plugs consistent with early hand-carved devotional sculpture. The surfaces retain remnants of original gesso and painted decoration, with extensive wear, losses, and old restorations throughout, contributing to a richly developed patina. The figures rest on integral carved bases, suggesting their original use as architectural or ecclesiastical elements.
