Leonard Wells Volk (American, 1828–1895) Douglas and Marion Volk’s Hands 1882 Measurements: 3 1/4 inches high x 9 inches long x 6 inches deep Bronze sculpture cast from life, depicting the clasped hands of the artist’s son, Stephen Arnold Douglas Volk, and his wife, Marion Larrabee Volk. The composition presents two overlapping hands modeled with naturalistic detail, emphasizing anatomical accuracy and surface texture. The bronze retains a dark patina consistent with late 19th-century casting practices. Signed and dated “L. W. Volk, seeit, 1882” on the sculpture. Leonard Wells Volk was a prominent American sculptor best known for creating one of only two life masks of Abraham Lincoln, as well as casting Lincoln’s hands.
