작품 상세
For your consideration are two, framed engravings of George & Martha Washington, originally painted by Gilbert Stuart, engraved by A.B. Walter (1820-1875) in the 1860s. The Lansdowne portrait is an iconic life-size portrait of George Washington painted by Gilbert Stuart in 1796. It depicts the 64-year-old president of the United States during his final year in office. Gilbert Stuarts 1796 oil-on-canvas portrait of Martha Washington, known as part of the "Athenaeum Portraits," is an unfinished study showing her at age 65 in a lace cap. Jointly owned by the National Portrait Gallery and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, this, believed to be her only likeness by Stuart, was commissioned alongside a matching portrait of George Washington (Lansdowne Portrait). The engravings are set in early, painted wood frames and sit behind old glass. The engravings are marked on the bottom reading, "Painted By G. Stuart / Published by John Dainty 31 S. 6th Str. Philadelphia / Eng. by A.B. Walter" and show the names "George Washington" and "Martha Washington". They show good condition overall with wear present from their age and use over the years, but no major signs of damage is noted. The visible engravings measure 9 1/2" L x 7 5/8" W, while the entire piece measures 14" L x 12 1/8" W x 1 1/2" D. The two framed engravings have a collective weight of 3 pounds and 4 ounces.
