It was produced entirely in Canada and published in the year of Confederation. Catherine Parr Traill (1802-1899) was an English-Canadian naturalist known as a pioneer for female botanists. She and her sisters formed a noteworthy group of female authors. Agnes Fitzgibbon (1833-1913) a prolific natural history artist, was Traill's niece.
