DAVID, Giovanni (1743-1790) - Divers portraits gravés a l'eauforte et dediés à M. Dominique Corvi Peintre Celebre. Venice: s.n., 1775. The complete series of Divers Portraits, in excellent condition, comprises Venetian engravings dedicated to Domenico Corvi and depicting masks and popular figures associated with Venice and its surroundings. The images fully reflect the refinement and theatricality of 18th-century Venetian culture and are accompanied, along the lower margin, by satirical quotations drawn from Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux’s Satires. The artist produced these works during his Venetian period, under the patronage of Giacomo Durazzo. David was among the first Italian printmakers to experiment with aquatint, achieving innovative tonal effects. In terms of subject matter, composition, and technique, the series anticipates and would later influence Goya’s celebrated Caprichos. Le immagini riflettono pienamente la raffinatezza e la teatralità della cultura veneziana del Settecento e sono accompagnate, nella parte inferiore, da citazioni satiriche tratte dalle "Satires" di Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux. l'autore realizzò queste opere durante il suo periodo veneziano, sotto la protezione del mecenate Giacomo Durazzo. David fu tra i primi stampatori italiani a sperimentare l’acquatinta, ottenendo effetti tonali innovativi. Per temi, composizione e uso della tecnica, la serie anticipa e influenzerà i celebri "Caprichos" di Goya.
