Thomas Hart Benton (American, 1889-1975) Flood, 1937 Lithograph on GCM paper 9 ¼" x 12 ¼" (image) Edition of 196 Pencil-signed to the bottom right corner. Circulated by Associated American Artists, New York City. The sheet measures 12" x 16" and the glazed frame measures 16" x 19". Of Flood, Benton wrote: "Ohio - Mississippi floods of 1937. Made in the bootheel of Missouri. The '37 flood brought under water great sections of the lowlands of S.E. Missouri. Many farms and farm homes were under water. The two women are looking over their own home as the muddy water rushes by. A series of drawings were made of conditions there for the Kansas City Star and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The lithograph is from one of the drawings."
