Thomas Hart Benton (American, 1889-1975) Wreck of the Ol’ 97, 1944 Lithograph on paper 15" x 10 ¼" (image) Edition of 250   Pencil-signed to the bottom right margin. Circulated by Associated American Artists, New York City. The sheet measures 12 ½" x 17" and the glazed frame measures 17" x 21 ½".   Of Wreck of the Ol’ 97, Benton wrote: “Famous folk song of the ‘20s. Not a ‘true’ folk song but one of the ‘synthetics’ of the time based on an old folk tune. Drawing made in winter of 1926-27 - painting of this subject was purchased by Sears Roebuck Co. and a print of it was circulated by the firm during the 40s and early 50s.
