Four Famille Rose Plaques mounted as hanging panels; diameter: 46 cm (18 in.) with frames, 40 cm (16 in.) porcelain surface; 3 plaques in perfect condition and one plaque has a hair crack at the left side on the surface, lightly visible; each set into a conteredge wood frame, with a decorative metal hanging clasp at the top. Each brightly enameled circular panel depicts stories from the Romance of Three Kingdoms (Sanguo zhi yanyi 三國志演義, one of the four classical Chinese novels; each panel has two well-known scenes, each scene is accompanied by a hand-written caption, surrounded by geometrical trimming highlighted by red flowers at the center. The top left plaque depicts the scene of “Battle Strategy at Longzhong,” in whgich Zhu Geliang (181-234) advised Liu Bei (161-223), the emperor of Shu Kingdom, to collaborate with Sun Quan (182-252), emperor of the Wu Kingdom, to defeat Cao Cao (155-220), emperor of Wei Kingdom. The bottom two plaques focus on the rebellion led by Dong Zuo (d. 121), a powerful general and warlord, and his death at the hands of his subordinate Lü Bu (ca. 192). The accompanying captions cite directly from the novel or he famous poems of the time, and are accompanied by three red seals, suggesting that all four plaques were made by the same workshop.
