Prints - Birds. John Gould, Velvet Scoter. Oidemia Fusca; (Flem.), from The Birds of Europe, 1832 (circa). Hand Color. This handsome hand-colored lithograph depicts a male velvet scoter. According to an accompanying page of text, the species is commonly found in the northern parts of Great Britain, the Arctic regions of Asia, Denmark, Russia, Kamchatka, and Siberia. "Drawn from Nature & on Stone by J. & E. Gould." John Gould (1804-81) created some of the most beautiful bird prints ever produced and was known throughout the world as "The Bird Man." This lithograph was published in his 5-volume The Birds of Europe (1832-37). Printed by C. Hullmandel.
