Striking stipple engraving, depicting Death as a crowned skeleton with wings and tail, attacking a woman in an airborne battle. Death points a spear at her as she pushes him away, a hound of Hell barking at their feet, while the woman grips the wrist of another crowned and winged figure, representing life, who brandishes a sword and pulls her from below. 17 x 23 cm ( sight); 37 x 43 cm (frame). In an extensive search, we have been unable to positively identify either the artist of the original image (signed "Cahll") nor the engraver (signed "Gautier"). Framed. 17 x 14.5 inches.
