This beautiful print is from Johann Weinmann's Phytanthoza Iconographia published from 1737 to 1745. The work contained over 1,000 mezzotint engravings, printed in color with the finished color applied by hand. The botanical drawings from which the plates are taken are mainly by Ehret, his first published work, and by N. Asamin, a talented young female artist. The work was based on Weinmann's collection of plants and was financed by him. It was one of the most comprehensive botanical references of the 18th century. Weinmann's work is highly valued for the undoubted artistic standard of the plates, and the individual plates represent an extremely valuable record of the plant kingdom as it was understood and classified in the period just preceding the introduction of Linnaeus' revolutionary system of classification.
