Condition: The flimsy Japanese paper of the woodcut is partially very faint foxed and technique-related slightly wavy. The sheet is mounted to a mat at the reverse upper corners, the mounts slightly showing through. The frame displays occasional scratches, but is otherwise in good condition. The image measures 20.6 x 27.8 cm, the sheet 27 x 33 cm. The framed dimensions are 59 x 74 cm. Gerd Arntz (1900-1988) Gerd Arntz, son of an iron factory owner, was born in Remscheid. He grew up among the working children and experienced from an early age, class distinctions between workers and employers. This experience would shape his later artistic work. Since he had no interest to take over the family firm, he completed an apprenticeship as drawing teacher at a private art school in Düsseldorf. Politically oriented left and with the desire for social improvement Arntz began to work with the Progressive, a group of artists whose concern was to critically identify social contexts and thus induce a positive social change.
