Herbert Breiter (1927-1999) Herbert Breiter was born in 1927 in Silesia and at 17 years of age he tried to be accepted in the Kunstakademie in Dresden. Yet instead of the anticipated answer, he received conscription to the army, thus was only able to join an art school after the war. He applied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Salzburg and had to try and get a residence permit in Austria, as he was now stateless. He was denied both these things, so self-taught himself painting and earnt his living through his skills with the applied arts and also, working as a ski instructor. In 1947 he finally gained Austrian citizenship and painted more and more. As a student of Max Pfeiffer Watenphul, he met painters and sculptors and was admitted to the Salzburger Kunstverein. His reputation increased and he held many exhibitions and won several prizes. Nearly every year Breiter traveled to Italy or Greece, and the Mediterranean landscape became one of his main motifs in painting.
