After his discontinued art study at the Académie Julian in Paris, Arp founded with other artists the ‘Moderner Bund’ and established his first contacts with ‘Der Blaue Reiter’. In 1940, Arp’s works, which were highly influenced by the Dadaism and the Surrealism, were announced ‘entartete Kunst’ by the National Socialists. Despite this fact, the artist was highly successful on an international level, he created a tall sculpture for the UNESCO building in Paris and took part at the documenta I in 1955, the documenta II in 1959 and the documenta III in 1964. The Fondation Arp in Clamart is located in the former studio of the painter's house which was designed by Sophie Taeuber, originally founded in Arp’s house in Locarno by Marguerite Arp-Hagenbach in 1988. In these two locations as well as many other international institutions house numerous works of the artist.
