Condition: The sheet is in good condition, with discoloration, handling creases and scattered marks. Corners and edges bear tiny damages and there are two small tears at the upper edge. Additionally, there is a small tear in the paper close to the left edge. Verso remains of the previous mounting can be seen. The image dimensions are 24 x 18.1 cm and the sheet measures 28.9 x 21.4 cm. (msc) Carlo Mense (1886-1956) Carlo Mense was a German painter and graphic artist of the first half of the 20th century. He was a pupil of P. Janssen in Düsseldorf and of L. Corinth in Berlin. Mense was a member of the Rhenish secession in Cologne. Works of the artist were in the following important exhibitions before the first World War such as 'Sonderbund' (1912), Rhenish expressionists and German 'Herbstsalon' (both 1913). He was professor at the Academy in Wroclaw up from 1925. Mense travelled to different countries in Europe such as Italy, Greece, England, France and Russia. His oeuvre presents mainly landscapes, portraits and still lifes. Works of the artist are among others in the collections of the following museums: Berliner Nationalgalerie as well as in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne.
