Dan Flavin (1933-1996)Dan Flavin was born in New York, where he was first employed as a meteorologist by the US Air Force. Following a deep interest in the arts, however, Flavin studied art history at the Columbia University between 1957 and 1959. His early works were exhibited at the Judson Gallery in New York in 1961. In the same year, Flavin created his first works with electric light. Since 1964, Flavin focused mainly on installations with fluorescent light. Flavin was represented at major art exhibitions worldwide, including the documenta 4 in Kassel. Examples of his artistic output are on display in museums such as the National Gallery of Canada, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich.
