Title: 'Mechano Marvel of the Age', hand colored pencil signed lithograph dated 1928 lower right, edition of 50 prints, 38 with the hand colored details. Image size 12 x 9.25, frame measures 27.75 x 23 inches. Mabel Dwight is best known as a social realist working in New York in the 1930s. For a time she was married to fellow WPA artist Eugene Higgins (born in Kansas City in 1874) and has been compared to Wanda Gag (see lot 254) and Rockwell Kent (see lot 294). This depiction of a Coney Island sideshow summarizes her focus of depicting the comedy and tragedy of life in the city during this period. She later worked under the Federal Art Project, a program that primarily employed male artists.
