Wittlich captured them as individuals, as for example the Queen of England who can be seen in a carriage in one of the sheets, or as groups of women in mannequin poses. In the original work after which these serigraphs were printed, the self-taught Wittlich was inspired by photos from magazines for example. Four of the seven serigraphs comprised in this portfolio are signed and dated lower center in the print ‘Josef Wittlich 1967‘, two others are signed likewise lower center ‘Joseph Wittlich‘, one is unsigned. They were published by edition Domberger and are contained in a wrapper with the justification in a black half-cloth cardboard portfolio. The portfolio shows slight signs of use and age, the sheets are in very good condition. The portfolio measures 68 x 50 cm, the seven sheets each measure 63 x 44.5 cm. Josef Wittlich (1903-1982) Born 1903 in Gladbach, Josef Wittlich worked among other things as a servant, officer’s batman, and, after his return from Russian captivity, in a ceramics factory in Höhr-Grenzhausen. In his spare time he painted and drew after cigarettes pictures, photos from mail-order catalogs or magazines and war books. His work comprises three main subject groups: soldiers and battle scenes, portraits of rulers and images of women. He accentuated, simplifies and distorts the facial features of his depicted figures. In 1967, the artist Fred Stelzig (1923-2006) discovered the work of the autodidact and decides to exhibit and popularize it which he successfully managed.
