Stephen James Ferris (American, 1835-1915), "Dreamland", etching with extensive hand-watercoloring, 1883, after a painting by C.D. Weldon (1883), signed in stone UL, signed with pencil LR, ed. probably 60, The Philadelphia Art Alliance, who commissioned the edition, lists "60 proofs", with the typographic address of the publisher, Christian Klackner, New York, LC, printed in black ink and probably hand colored by the artist, making this a unique work, light scratch to center, currently matted, 16 1/2" h. x 25 1/2" w. [The dolls are Japanese Ichimatsu. The etching is, in itself, uncommon with two recorded sales (Theriault's, Annapolis, MD). The work was completed the same year that Sigmund Freud delivered his first series of lectures on the significance of dreams at the University of Vienna.]
