This rare and superbly colored engraving show the double portrait of the two famous cartographers and scientists Gerard Mercator and Jodocus Hondius sitting at a table surrounded by globes and atlases. A map of Europe is mounted on the wall behind them. They are flanked by a lavishly made ornamental framing. Their biographical details are specified in Latin below the portraits. This illustration is particularly captivating for the abundance of detailed depictions of cartography utensils. With text in Latin on verso. Condition In very good to excellent condition. Some splits in upper and lower margin were closed and rebacked. This is only visible against light. Marginal blemishes in lower right corner likewise skilfully rebacked. Smoothed centerfold.
