Splendid colored copper engraving with double portrait of the two cartographers Gerard Mercator and Jodocus Hondius Printed and published by Jodocus Hondius in Amsterdam, 1613 Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) - Renowned mathematician, geographer, philosopher, theologian, cartographer and globe maker Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612) - Renowned cartographer and publisher of atlases and maps The portrait originates from their famous 'Atlas sive Cosmographicae Meditationes De Fabrica Mundi Et Fabricati Figura' Very good to excellent condition Dimensions of leaf: 50 x 40 cm, plate dimensions: 45.5 x 38.9 cm Extremely decorative and rare leaf Object is regular taxed. This rare and superbly colored engraving show the double portrait of the two famous cartographers and scientists Gerard Mercator and Jodocus Hondius sitting at a table surrounded by globes and atlases. A map of Europe is mounted on the wall behind them. They are flanked by a lavishly made ornamental framing. Their biographical details are specified in Latin below the portraits. This illustration is particularly captivating for the abundance of detailed depictions of cartography utensils. With text in Latin on verso. Condition In very good to excellent condition. Some splits in upper and lower margin were closed and rebacked. This is only visible against light. Marginal blemishes in lower right corner likewise skilfully rebacked. Smoothed centerfold.
