He is one of the artists of the Neo-Expressionism, an art movement that internationally occurred around 1970, as response to the prevailing Minimal and Concept Art. As common characteristic a return to figural painting, often in bright colors and with individual themes can be seen. At the seminal exhibition 'Zeitgeist', which took place in 1982 at the Gropius-Bau in Berlin, Bruce McLean was represented. The serigraph in colors is numbered, signed, inscribed and dated lower right in pencil '1/20 Bruce McLean Berlin 1982' and titled at the top in the print 'Putting on the angst'. The sheet is overall minor darkened and shows several soft to significant creases as well as a short tear (circa 1.5 cm) in the upper corner. On reverse it is mounted at spots to a backboard with double-sided foam tape and additionally fixed with steel pins in the upper corners, thus two small pinholes there. The frame is overall in good condition with signs of wear. The sheet-sized image measures 124 x 87.3 cm. The framed dimensions are 146 x 106 cm. Bruce McLean (b. 1944) The Glasgow-born artist studied from 1961 to 1963 at the city's Glasgow School of Art. Subsequently, he moved to the Saint Martin's School of Art in London, where he studied with Anthony Caro and Philip King until 1966. In rebellion against the academic formalism that McLean felt with his teachers, he devoted himself to performances and sculptures with impermanent materials, which often showed a satirical reference to the art world. Since the mid-1970s, McLean increasingly dealt with painting and film. He taught at various schools, including the London Slade School of Fine Arts, where he taught since 1985 and worked as Head of Graduate Painting from 2002 to 2010. Bruce McLean's work has been shown in numerous exhibitions in renowned international museums. The artist lives and works in London.
