작품 상세

CertificateMarie Ursula Riemann-Reyher, Berlin, 9.9.2012.In her expertise, Mrs. Riemann-Reyher confirms this drawing to be one of Menzel's rare early works of this size. The young Menzel often trained his eye by sketching motifs from memory. These drawings are inscribed "Errinerung" or "Errin." (German for memory), and are often found in his sketchbooks or on loose pages during his early period. The style of the present work shows the most similarity to the drawings in his sketchbooks of 1835 - 1837.This piece was purchased in an assorted lot of works by various artists, including the Weimar painter Bertha Froriep, from whose family the works probably originated. Menzel knew the artist, and sent her a number of letters in the 1870s (cited from Mrs. Riemann-Reyer's expertise).
