Since the turn of the century, Munch increasingly created etchings, lithographs and woodcuts. The present lithograph depicts a self-portrait, in which the artist's face is displayed before an undefined, black background. Lost in thoughts, the artist's gaze is directly turned to the viewer. The arm bone in the foreground is particularly striking. It alludes to the subject of mortality, which the artist often depicted in his late period. The lithograph is inscribed on the upper edge of the stone 'Edvard Munch/1895' and signed in pencil lower right 'E. Munch' and additionally inscribed 'No. 23'. The cardboard has some few professionally restored tears in the margins, two of which reach into the printed area. Some of the tears have been reinforced with stripes of kozo paper on the verso. The upper margin has a horizontal water stain/tideline that has been scraped and retouched. An area across the left eye has also been slightly retouched. The printed surface around the tear in the lower left corner of the motif is shiny. Some vertical crease marks and one horizontal crease (from the right earlobe outwards to the edge of the cardboard) are visible in the black printed area. There is some surface dirt around all edges and a pale spot on the left margin. Otherwise the print is in good condition. The sheet's size is 55.3 x 40.7 cm, the print measures 45.6 x 21.1 cm. Edvard Munch (1863-1944) The Norwegian painter and graphic artist Edvard Munch is regarded as a pioneer of Expressionism. His works are often characterized by a deep melancholy. He created lithographs, etchings and woodcuts. Munch studied the Old Masters and nude drawing, and trained with the leading naturalist of Norway, Christian Krogh. His early works are influenced by the French Realism. However, starting in 1885, he radically broke with this style. The works of the following years, including the 'The Sick Child', are among his best known works. In 1889, Munch received a three-year art scholarship and went to Paris. In 1891, he made the first sketches for his famous work 'The Scream'. As to his subjects, Munch was mainly interested in the spiritual and not optical impressions that he gained from the motifs. Following an exhibition in Berlin in 1892, Munch decided to move to the city. In 1896, he returned to Paris and then to Germany in the early 20th century. Due to his great artistic originality in the field of printmaking, Munch today enjoys a reputation as one of the greatest classics of printmakers. In 1963, the Munch Museum in Oslo was opened to the public, sheltering a unique collection of Munch's estate. The National Gallery in Oslo also has a rich collection of Munch's paintings. Other major works can be found in the Paintings Gallery in Bergen. In 2012, one of the four versions of Munch's painting 'The Scream' was auctioned in New York almost 120 million dollars, making it the most expensive sold picture of the world.
