Georg Baselitz (b. 1938) Georg Baselitz, actually Hans-Georg Kern, was born in Upper Lusatia. In 1956 he began to study painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in East Berlin. Since his individual personality did not conform to the socialist ideas of the GDR, he was soon expelled and continued his studies in West Berlin, where he studied the theories of Kandinsky, Malevich and Nay and became interested in the art of the 'mentally ill'. In 1961 he adopted the pseudonym Georg Baselitz. In 1970 the first exhibition with exclusively 'inverted' paintings took place in a gallery in Cologne. With his frequently provocative works Baselitz played significant role in shaping modern painting. In 1977 he accepted a professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, in the 80s and 90s he taught at the University of Arts in Berlin. His works are in the collection of the Guggenheim Museum and MoMA in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Berlinische Galerie as well as the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin.
