ODILON REDON Croquis. Etching, circa 1880. 140x95 mm; 5 1/2x3 3/4 inches, wide margins. A fine artist's proof, printed with ink tone and before the steel-facing and reduction of the plate. Initialed in pencil, lower right (the impression in the Art Institute of Chicago is similarly initialed). According to Harrison, "In 1878 Redon went to Holland to study the works of Rembrandt. Three of the heads on Crocquis are copies from Rembrandt etchings. . . The woman at the top and the old man at the right are from Beggars Receiving Alms (Bartsch 176). The head at the lower left is from The Flute Player (Bartsch 188)." Mellerio 13.
