Munetsugu Satomi KLM / Amsterdam-Paris vintage poster 1933 39.125 h x 24.375 w in (99 x 62 cm) Satomi could be called-quite unpatronizingly, indeed in high praise-the Japanese Cassandre; both excelled in distilling a subject down to its essence, blending its pictorial representation and the lettering into near-pure graphic design. Upon viewing his poster for KLM, it's immediately clear why those comparisons are made. With the sparest graphic means necessary and without tonal excess we're instantly made aware of the airline's global reach. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines was founded on 7 October 1919, and has continued to operate under the same name to this day-though today it's a subsidiary of Air France-making it the oldest scheduled airline in the world with a continuous history.
