ANTHONY (TONY) FREDERICK SARG (1880-1942) UP RIVER BY THE UNDERGROUND. 1913. 39 1/2x24 1/4 inches, 100 1/4x61 1/2 cm. Johnson Riddle Ltd., London. Condition B: entirely-replaced and overpainted margins; repaired tears, creases, abrasions and overpainting in image. Sarg was a painter, illustrator and caricaturist who designed posters for the Underground from 1912-1914. He was a member of the London Sketch Club (along with other prominent poster designers such as John Hassall, Dudley Hardy, Fred Taylor and Alfred Leete). The Club's "collective interest in humorous illustration led to humor being identified as one of the most successful characteristics in British poster design" (London Transport p. 21).
