Abraham Lincoln Washington DC, February 9, 1864 Abraham Lincoln Penny Profile Meserve Photograph Iconic Abraham Lincoln Penny Profile Meserve, developed directly from the original negative, features Abraham Lincoln in the distinguished right-facing profile immortalized on the U.S. Lincoln cent. The verso bears the crisp stamp: "THE Collection OF AMERICANA OF FREDERICK H. MESERVE NEW YORK." The image is in fine condition and measures 3" x 4". The photograph, known as the "penny profile," was taken by Anthony Berger of Mathew Brady's Washington, D.C. studio on February 9, 1864. It is one of the most reproduced images of Abraham Lincoln and served as the direct model for Victor David Brenner's design of the Lincoln cent, first issued in 1909 to commemorate the centennial of Lincoln's birth. This print comes from the distinguished collection of Frederick Hill Meserve (1865–1962), a preeminent Lincoln scholar and photographic archivist. Meserve meticulously acquired original negatives and early reproductions, preserving the visual legacy of Lincoln and Civil War figures. His photographic prints, such as this one, are considered among the most reliable and historically valuable sources of Lincoln imagery.
