Abraham Lincoln Providence, RI, ca. 1865 CDV of Abraham Lincoln & Mary Lincoln in Separate Oval Images CDV [ABRAHAM LINCOLN]. Carte-de-visité with small oval portraits of Abraham Lincoln and Mary Lincoln. Providence, RI: A. E. Alden, [1865]. 1 p., 2.5" x 4". Photographer Augustus E. Alden of Providence, Rhode Island, took a February 1864 Anthony Berger photograph of President Abraham Lincoln and an 1861 Mathew Brady Studio photograph of First Lady Mary Lincoln and placed them side-by-side on this single carte-de-visité. It is elaborately and patriotically embossed with stars in the frames, the shield of the United States and laurel branches beneath, and an eagle and crossed flags above. Augustus E. Alden (1837-1914) was born in Massachusetts. In 1859, he married Ella Blake, and the couple had four children. He became an artist and also began dabbling in photography. He moved to Providence, Rhode Island, in 1864 and opened a photographic studio. He then became a licensed photographer in Troy, New York. There, he specialized in portrait cartes-de-visité. He also experimented with the photo-crayon portrait technique developed by Napoleon Sarony. Among those he photographed were President Abraham Lincoln, First Lady Mary Lincoln, and poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. His daughters assisted with the business, and his sons opened their own photographic studio in Springfield and then Boston, Massachusetts. Alden moved to Boston by 1900, where he lived and worked with his son.
