Captured by the renowned Underwood & Underwood News Photo agency, this sepia-toned image depicts Roosevelt in full formal attire, a three-piece suit, vest, and wide-brimmed hat while standing authoritatively on the deck of the vessel. The verso of the photograph bears original editorial markings and pencil notations, including "Roosevelt Sailing" and the date "2/11/16," along with the news agency's proprietary stamp. The photograph is professionally encapsulated and certified as Type II Authentic by PSA/DNA. The photograph measures approximately 8" x 10" and is encapsulated to an overall size of 9.75" x 13.25". Light toning, corner loss, else fine, a striking image! On February 11, 1916, Theodore Roosevelt embarked on a journey aboard the S.S. Guiana from New York Harbor to the West Indies. Though not currently running for office, Roosevelt remained politically active and influential. At the time, he was a leading voice in opposition to President Woodrow Wilson's foreign policy, advocating strongly for American military preparedness as global conflict escalated in Europe. This voyage represented both a physical and symbolic departure—Roosevelt stepping briefly away from the political spotlight while continuing to write and influence public discourse. He remained very much in the national eye throughout the trip. Within three years, Roosevelt would pass away in January 1919, making this image one of the last major photographic records of his international travels.
