Harry Truman [Washington, DC], ca. 1951 Harry Truman x2 Signed & Inscribed Portrait to Under Secretary of the Navy "Chief" Francis Whitehair Signed photograph A large, black and white portrait photograph depicting President Harry Truman, twice signed and inscribed by him to Under Secretary of the Navy Francis Whitehair. 1p on stiff board, measuring 11" x 13.75", [Washington, DC], ca. 1951. Featuring a lengthy autograph inscription along the lower margin in which he references a 19th century Osage Chief, signed at conclusion as "Harry Truman". With an additional autographed note affixed near the lower left of the image, reading: "Chief! Don't you trade off any carriers without telling me about it! H.S.T." Exhibits isolated dampstaining along lower edge of mount, not affecting signature or inscription. Faint corner wear and marginal toning throughout, with scattered soiling on verso. Very good to near fine, overall. An unusual format! The President's full inscription: "To Francis Whitehair with best wishes and a reminder than in 1808 Chief Whitehair of the Osage Nation traded five million acres of the richest Kansas and Missouri land for the privilege of buying whiskey at Major Sibley's Fort in Jackson County, MO!/ Harry Truman". Francis Preston Whitehair (1900-1977) was an American politician from Florida who served as Under Secretary of the Navy during the Truman Administration. Initially appointed as General Counsel of the Economic Stabilization Agency, he was later nominated by the President as Naval Under Secretary, a position he held from 1951 to 1953.
