Ivan Dmitri n.p., n.d. Ivan Dmitri Signed Yousuf Karsh Presentation Photo, "my good friend and companion in the arts" - Ex. Karsh Estate SP An original photographic print by American photographer Ivan Dmitri (aka Levon West) (1900-1968) depicting fellow photographer Yousuf Karsh seated in a Colonial Revival interior, retained by Karsh in his personal collection. The photograph is signed and inscribed by Dmitri outside of the image on the bottom of the mat as: "For my good friend and companion in the arts, / Yousuf Karsh - / with warmest affection. Ivan Dmitri." N.d., n.p., unknown printing or photo type. The black and white matte photograph is affixed to a stiff white board hand-stamped "Photograph © Ivan Dmitri" at center verso. Bearing an official estate label of provenance on verso, easily removable if desired. Dmitri's signature is slightly smeared but still very legible. Expected wear including negligible adhesive traces just touching the bottom photo edge. A few minor smudges and scuffs in the upper right corner of the mat, which is slightly bowed. Else clean, crisp, and bright. The actual photo size is 7.5" x 12.5" and the overall matted size is 12.75" x 18.125." Ex. Karsh Estate. The original photograph of Karsh was taken by Dmitri on November 1, 1965, as listed on Karsh.org (Sitting #12923). It is fitting that the celebrated and prolific portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002) - who took an estimated 250,000 negatives of subjects over the course of 15,000 sittings over seven decades - should be featured in dozens of self-portraits and portraits taken of him by fellow photographers. Karsh.org lists 50+ photographs depicting Karsh either taken by himself or others. Karsh and Dmitri shared a similar ethnic heritage: while Karsh had two Armenian parents, Dmitri had an Armenian father.
