Yousuf Karsh n.p., n.d. Yousuf Karsh Signed Self-Portrait, Ex. Karsh Estate SP An original photographic print depicting a self-portrait of Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002), the celebrated Armenian-Canadian photographer, retained by him in his personal collection. The photograph is signed by Karsh outside of the image on the mat at lower right as "Karsh." N.d., n.p., unknown printing or photo type. The black and white matte photograph shows an older Karsh gazing intently into the camera lens, holding a profile image of himself below. Bearing an official estate label of provenance on verso, easily removable if desired. Lightly pencil-inscribed "Karsh" at the top verso. A minor wrinkle to the left edge margin not affecting the image. Slight curling of the photo, else clean, crisp, and bright. 10.875" x 14." Ex. Karsh Estate. The original photograph was most likely taken by Karsh of himself in his Ottawa, Canada photo studio on August 25, 1976, as a publicity photograph for an upcoming Canadian magazine interview, as listed on Karsh.org (Sitting #13828). It is fitting that Karsh - a prolific portrait photographer who took an estimated 250,000 negatives of subjects over the course of 15,000 sittings over seven decades - should be featured in dozens of self-portraits and portraits taken of him by fellow photographers. Karsh.org lists 50+ photographs depicting Karsh, although this intense self-portrait seems one of the less well-known. Karsh Estate Provenance: Held by the Estate of Yousuf & Estrellita Karsh; after Yousuf's death in 2002 passing to Estrellita Karsh; after Estrellita's death in March 2025 passing to Katherine Getchell, Co-Executor, Estrellita Karsh Estate and Personal Representative of Estrellita Karsh.
