Karsh photographed four different view of Pablo Picasso in Vallauris, France, on July 2, 1954. The photo shoot is listed on Karsh.org (Sitting #11048). Karsh captured Picasso's legendary intensity, showing the artist standing, seated, and posing next to an oversized figural vase. Karsh later recalled that, despite assurances to the contrary from Picasso's intimates, the sculptor arrived to the photo shoot location on time and even wearing clean clothes. Karsh appreciated Picasso's fellow artist's eye, noting: "He could partially view himself in my large format lens and intuitively moved to complete the composition." A prolific portrait photographer, Karsh took an estimated 250,000 negatives of subjects over the course of 15,000 sittings over seven decades. Retrospective exhibitions of Karsh photography have pinpointed the 1940s and 1950s as Karsh's heyday - when he photographed actors, writers, composers, military leaders, politicians, and artists, like Picasso. Karsh Estate Provenance: Held by the Estate of Yousuf & Estrellita Karsh; after Yousuf's death in 2002 passing to Estrellita Karsh; after Estrellita's death in March 2025 passing to Katherine Getchell, Co-Executor, Estrellita Karsh Estate and Personal Representative of Estrellita Karsh.
