Carte de Visite Album Family of Harewood Park, Herefordshire Carte de Visite album with Leigh Hoskyns hand inscribed on title page, containing approx. 100 cdvs and 2 cabinet cards. 69 cdvs are named with tags. Photographers include: Hazell Applegarth, Hill and Saunders, Maull and Co., Bassano, White of Reading, Mrs Bustin and Sons of Hereford and Ross. The land at Harewood Park was originally part of a royal hunting estate, King John granted it to the Knights Templar in 1215. The house and grounds were bought by the Hoskyne family in the 17th century and remained there until 1940s. The album contains an albumen print(145 x 200mm) showing the great oak at Harewood, dated 1865. Portraits include Chandos Wren Hoskyns (1812-1876), who was a landowner, agriculturist, politician and author, 2nd son of Sir Hungerford Hoskyns who extensively rebuild the house at Harewood in 1839. Chandos Hoskyns' 1st wife was Theodosia Wren, a descendant of Christopher Wren which inspired Chandos to change his name to Wren-Hoskyns. Theodosia died and he married Anna Fane in 1846. Other portraits include Sir John Hugh Hoskyns, Peyton Hoskyns who was appointed to HMS Cracker in 1873 and became a Lieutenant, Bennet Hoskyns, John Hoskyns of the 2/24th Regiment, Mary and Florence Hoskyns. Also many Reverends of Haileybury and portraits of men from Eaton and Trinity colleges and J.Upington "The Lion of South Africa". Notable portraits are the 3 by Mrs Bustin, outdoor portraits of Chandos, Annie and Dora Hoskyns. Leather bound album with tooling and brass initials, LH. Album in a poor state, spine and leaves loose. Cdvs are in mixed condition.
